Hybrids don't need to be shaped like a cheese wedge to get better gas mileage. The design differences are subtly different from the traditional Sonata, yet the Sonata Hybrid achieves the industry's lowest 0.25 coefficient of drag.
The Sonata Hybrid is different, but not eccentric.
A raked roofline, modern design and 16-inch or available 17-inch alloy wheels lower aerodynamic drag while adding style. A unique front grille and LED headlight accents with daytime running lights also distinguish the Hybrid from its traditional counterpart. Front fog lights, LED tail lights and side mirror turn signal indicators increase visibility and appeal, while the Blue Drive badge shows you're leading the way to lower emissions.
No more fumbling for the key in your pocket or purse. The Sonata recognizes your key fob and automatically unlocks when you push the small black button on the door handle. Get in, fasten your shoulder belt, hit the start button and go.
Get your daily dose of sunshine, fresh air and vitamin D with the power tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof.
Heated side mirrors ward off frost, while speed-sensing wipers work harder the faster you drive. The intentionally large windows increase visibility, reduce blind spots and contribute to a feeling of spaciousness and ride comfort for you and your passengers.
Solar control windows block UV rays to protect the interior, and you, from the wrath of the sun. The cooler cabin means you can leave the air conditioning off, saving gas and the environment.
Brilliant design and a more compact battery that fits in the trunk give the Sonata Hybrid the most interior space in the Hybrid Midsize Sedan class, and Blue Link™ technology turns the interior into your own mobile command center. Plus there's an electroluminescent instrument cluster with hybrid technology display. A power-adjustable driver seat with lumbar support, dual temperature controls, heated front and rear seats make it a supremely comfortable place, too.
Thanks to the space-saving lithium polymer battery, the Sonata Hybrid has more passenger room than the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion hybrids. There's more head room, more leg room in front and even plenty of room for luggage in the trunk.
Blue Link technology is designed with a multitude of features to make your everyday life easier. Connect to Blue Link through your smartphone, a web application or an in-car system to locate a gas station, find a shortcut, learn about mechanical issues, call for help and much more.
The Sonata Hybrid's cabin is ergonomically designed so that driver and passenger amenities are within quick and easy reach. The navigation touchscreen and audio controls are set a little higher on the center stack, making them easier to check while staying focused on the road. The dual automatic climate control offers custom settings for the driver and front passenger along with floor console air vent controls for rear passengers. Steering-wheel-mounted audio and phone controls keep your attention on the business at hand.
The Sonata's navigation system makes it easy to get from A to B or locate points of interest such as gas stations and ATMs, with voice recognition or the interactive touchscreen, while XM NavTraffic® and XM Data Services allow you to get a clear picture of traffic situations and check the weather, stocks and sports scores. In Hybrid Display Mode you can monitor your driving to make the most efficient use of the Hybrid Blue Drive System.
Thinking ahead from the moment you back out of the driveway. The rearview camera features guidelines that rotate with the steering wheel to display your path and take the guesswork out of backing up.
The AM/FM/CD/MP3 Audio System comes with 6 speakers, and XM® Satellite Radio for the best that commercial-free radio has to offer, with a complimentary three-month subscription on us. Plus the built-in iPod®/USB and auxiliary jacks let you access your iPod through the audio controls, displaying track and artist information, all while charging your digital personal listening device.*
An Infinity® 400-watt Premium Audio System with subwoofer and external amplifier is also available to add power and presence to favorite music.
*Available Hyundai iPod cable needed for integration.
Owning a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid means you don't have to sacrifice on safety. Active and passive standard safety features include six airbags, 4-wheel ABS, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, plus a host of other modern safety technologies that helped earn the Sonata model line a 2012 "Top Safety Pick" award from the IIHS and a NHTSA 5-star Crash Rating.
In 2012 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will require all vehicles to be equipped with ESC, a feature that the Sonata Hybrid and all Hyundai models have today.
NHTSA studies show passenger cars equipped with ESC experience 35% fewer single-vehicle crashes, and 30% fewer single-vehicle fatalities. ESC sensors measure the difference between a driver's intended path - when a turn is less or more than intended - and applies appropriate braking force to individual wheels to help regain control. ESC also includes Traction Control System (TCS)2, which reduces wheelspin when accelerating.
By reducing wheelspin in various adverse traction conditions, including inclement weather, Traction Control gives more stable and predictable acceleration for a more confident, controlled driving experience.
Emergency braking can cause a vehicle's wheels to lock up and skid, resulting in a loss of steering control exactly when you need it most. ABS helps prevent the possibility of wheel lockup under braking, and rapidly pulses the brakes to help you retain steering control as you come to a stop.
Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) balances braking forces at each wheel of the vehicle depending on road conditions, available traction, the weight of the passengers and cargo that the vehicle is carrying, and even the speed the driver is going. This helps the driver maintain confident control in difficult braking situations.
In emergency braking situations, many drivers may not apply sufficient braking force to achieve the shortest possible stopping distance. Brake Assist helps detect emergency braking and ensures the maximum braking force is immediately applied to minimize stopping distances.
In addition to crumple zones, unibody construction, and active front head restraints that help reduce the chance of whiplash, the Sonata Hybrid also has advanced front, front side-impact, and side curtain airbags, to help protect you in case of an accident.
The Sonata Hybrid is the first non-plug-in hybrid with the next-generation lithium polymer battery technology, the most efficient battery on the market today. It also features a 6-speed automatic transmission that delivers a smooth feel, best-in-class 206 net horsepower.
Compared to the nickel-metal hydride battery used in competitors' hybrids, the Sonata Hybrid uses a polymer gel as the electrolyte in its battery. This allows for a thinner and lighter casing which translates to more cargo and interior volume. This next-generation battery is capable of delivering the same power with 25% less weight, 40% less volume and 10% more efficiency. It also discharges more slowly to maintain available power up to 1.7 times longer than traditional batteries.
Hybrid engines are obviously different from standard car engines, and the Sonata Hybrid is different still from other hybrids. Using a fully parallel HEV system provides optimum power, with engine and battery power supply working simultaneously. Additional energy saving comes through the electric engine's Hybrid Starter Generator (HSG) function and an all-electric mode up to 74 mph.
Tight-fisted with fuel, generous with performance. Sonata Hybrid's 2.4L DOHC Theta II engine features an Atkinson Cycle for decreased pumping and friction loss - resulting in improved fuel economy.
The engine-speed-sensitive, motor-driven power steering gives you more assistance at lower speeds (for parking) and makes the handling less touchy at higher speeds (on the highway). The turning diameter is a tight 35.8 feet, curb-to-curb. The fully independent suspension, with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear, includes advanced SACHS® Amplitude Selective Damping shock absorbers for added response and a smooth ride.
